the art of writing sop http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/prep-resources/1501-the-art-of-writing-sop.html

SOP for NMIMS

well,
i am juss copy pasting my SOP which i had written for my PI in NMIMS....
i wanna copy paste it coz i had thought (and i rarely think) for about 1.5 hrs to prepare this small an essay.... had to rack my brains and think about myself... the best part of preparing for the mba exams is that u get to understand urself and be happy with urself... am happy to get into a top college in india for doing my mba but if u ask me wat was the one thing that i liked the most while doing my prep i would say "Unlearning and Learning" ... this is a complicated and tuff process and realising urself is a much tougher task... it takes some time for u to know urself.... i especially feel indians are more into doing wat their parents want, the image we have abt ourself is not wat we really have its more wat others think abt us. So when u start realising urself u ponder and ruminate and finally get a pic of urself....

here starts my SOP
-----------------------------------------
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
-----------------------------------------
Change is the only thing constant in this world. To handle change effectively and successfully one needs to have a sound academic foundation as well as practical implementation of this knowledge.

My good academic background is evident from the fact that I stood in the top 100 in my state during my 10th exams for which I was awarded a scholarship. I was also in the top 0.4% in EAMCET’97.

In my career in Wipro, I had received client appreciation and was consequently chosen as Wipro Buddy to familiarize new recruits with the culture of Wipro. I was also selected for FMP (Future Manager Program) and stood first in the selection process. In Aricent, I was involved in redesigning a module (IP) which resulted in considerable reduction of the maintenance and enhancement cycles. This shows that the application of my theory has been noteworthy and has been appreciated.

A well rounded personality also has interests and passions. I like playing table tennis and have won quite a few prizes in it. My passion is “whistling songs” and have given stage shows in my college and in my organization.

My strengths are perseverance, risk taking ability and good inter personal skills and weakness is “rigid about decision making”.

My entrepreneurial skill is evident from the fact that I had developed a successful business model, MODEL EAMCET 2000, which provided a common platform for the students in the twin cities to test their abilities among their peers prior to the actual exam (EAMCET). It was sponsored by ECIT and a total of 3000 students had taken this exam.

I strongly believe that I bring a unique combination of competencies to NMIMS which will further be honed and developed in an atmosphere of symbiotic learning.

P.S. few tips specially for the aspirants from medical background.
1. prep well on why MBA…prove that doctors are good in leadership role…half of your work is done.

Some pointers to proceed further...

1. The SOP must be typed and printed on Executive Bond Paper. Make 2-3 copies of it. Send one to the college along with your GD/PI form. It should not exceed more than one page. Please refer to Target NMAT for further tips for SOP.

2. GD/PI form must be filled up with care. No overwriting and smudges. Make a copy of the form and make a rough draft. Fill up your details carefully.

3. Mention your course, NMAT ID, Registration No. and your GD/PI date on the back of the DD. Keep a copy for future purposes.

4. Keep around 2-3 printouts of the score card. It is your call letter,an important document.

5. Please call up NMIMS in case you want to change your slots. They will consider it only if the dates clash, not otherwise.

6. There are good hotels in Vile Pale East at reasonable rates within 2-2.5k. I stayed at Hotel Shangrila for 1100 Rs. It was a decent place for a night's stay. Please search over internet for accommodation in hotels in Vile Parle East and West, Santacruz (W), Andheri (W). They are nearer to the GD/PI venue.

Get 5 printouts of your score card. Attest every document except your GD/PI form, SOP and Score card.

Self attestation won't do. Gazetted officers and Head of your colleges (for Freshers) would do though.

Today: Body Language

The best B schools of the country insist that intelligence, good communication skills and a great body language are essential traits of a prospective candidate.

Even though you may have great acads and possess the capability to woo people with your melodramatic tone, it is quite possible that put them off with your lousy body language.

Please take care of the following while going for your interview

1. Boys: Clean shaven and trimmed hair
Girls: No makeup please !!

Also, no strong perfumes or aftershaves.

2. Wear a business suit. Girls, you may wear a saree, but salwar won't do.

3. Knock and ask for permission before you enter the PI hall.

4. Sit upright, but don't give the PI panel an impression that you are uncomfortable in the pose.

5. Have your certificates, SOP and CV ready in a folder. Place it on your lap while sitting.

6. Smile often, but don't put on a permanent smiley face.

7. Wait for about 5 seconds before answering any questions. Give some thought before you answer.

8. No wild hand gestures, keep it subtle.

9. Don't scratch your nose, or forehead..EVER !!

10. While leaving, wish everyone a good day and close the door behind you.

A week remains for the D-Day....I hope you prep is going well.
******************************
One of the most dreaded yet important questions in any interview is "WHY MBA" . Most of the people answer the question in their mind like

" I want to find the shortest path to quick and easy money, and marry my dream boy/girl"

( One of the candidates did actually say that...)

There is no definite answer to the question. It differs from person to person.

The best way to answer the question is through inner retrospection.
Try answering the following questions.

1. What is that you are doing now? What does your future look like to you?

2. What do you want from your MBA degree? Money? Profile upgradation? or just a postgraduate degree? Of course, you never mention the first reason.

3. How will an MBA degree build your aimed job/ profile?

4. What are the your strengths/ weaknesses?

5. Entrepreneurship, anybody?

If you mention entrepreneurship, then get ready to answer

a. Why not EID, Ahmedabad?

b. Why not a degree in Social Entrepreneurship from NMIMS than wasting an MBA seat?

My answer to the above questions was something like

"I want to gain an overall perspective of all the factors involved in a successful venture, that is, finance, marketing, operations and HR. Pursuing a degree in MBA from NMIMS would mean that not only receive quality education, but also expand my way of thought through high quality peer interaction. And keeping in mind that NMIMS is located in Mumbai, I can be assured of a location advantage which would translate into great industry interaction and further expansion of my knowledge base

SOP Tips...

http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/other-...ml#post3204518 (Target nmat 2011-12)
***********

SOP Tips...

The SOP might seem a one page document, but is EXTREMELY critical for your interview at NMIMS. It can land you a final convert, literally. Trust me when I say this.

A good SOP would invite intelligent questions from the panel, which can be handled with ease by any candidate. After all, it is your own SOP..

There is certain preferred format for a good SOP, though not a rigid one.

1. INTRODUCTION: Extremely important. This creates an interest for the reader to pursue further. It can start with your background or your best reason for doing an MBA. Or you can relate your life experiences and your decision to do an MBA.

2. BODY: It must deal with

a. WHY MBA?
b. Your current work ex/ Study environment and how an MBA will help you pursue it further, or act as a continuance for your career.
c. Your laurels ( not more than 2 years old ), awards, recognition and how they add to your profile for an MBA candidate. They must display some essential skills like leadership, diligence, perseverance, passion, motivation and like. But don't overdo it, don't mention more than 3-4 such events.
d. Any source of inspiration who pushed you to do an MBA to fulfill the reasons you mentioned earlier
e. Any relevant information, you deem fit

3. CONCLUSION: Now you must deal with, " WHY NMIMS". Research about NMIMS, and find some facts which can be related to the reasons that you mentioned earlier. Mention them clearly.

Some important tips..

1. Use your mind, not your heart. Don't use cliched statements or poetic words. MBA waale poetic line maarne lage to companies band ho jaayengi.

2. Don't portray yourself as a superman. A humble approach is recommended.

3. Don't mention entrepreneurship unless you are serious about it, or can back it up with some solid facts. It is a favorite reason for most of the candidates, and most loathed by the PI panel.

4. 500 words is the limit. Write it in paragraphs, but not too lengthy ones to put the panel to sleep.

Please refer to the PG thread, " How to write an SOP" for more tips. I am attaching my SOP for NMIMS for reference only. It is heavily drawn from the thread and my experiences. Please don't indulge in any blatant plagiarism, though some muted ones would do...
*********

Today's special: PI Tips

A 3 member panel would be greeting you in your PI. It would comprise of

1. A Faculty of NMIMS
2. An Alumni of NMIMS
3. An Industry expert

The interview may last anywhere between 2 minutes to 30 minutes.

Now, some tips,

1. Dress Smartly. Dress in a subtle yet impressive manner. Last year, about 2 minutes were devoted to my blue tie and suit.. Needless to say, First impression is the last impression.

2. Be thorough with current affairs. Read up the last 6 month's current affairs. TIME, CL and other coaching institutes release a GK compendium. Get hold of it.

3. Acads must be given due importance by the freshers. Especially people with engineering background.

4. People with work ex, be ready to answer questions regarding your workplace, company history, current state and your responsibilities.

5. It is rarely a stress interview. So relax and give your best.

6. There are some questions like "Tell me about yourself" which must be prepared with due diligence. I would be dealing with them soon.

7. SOP; it can be a deal clincher. So, give high importance and proofread them for any mistakes. I would help you there too. You may post it on this thread for me to analyse them and give you feedback.

8. Be ready to justify your poor acads, if any. I will be dealing with it too in my future posts.

9. Research about NMIMS. The PI panel loves when someone shows some passion about an institute. But don't over do it.

in addition to what manas has posted, people with work-ex,please note that you need to be thorough with your acads as well as your company, job and your work.
I have 2 years' of work-ex.so they asked me everything about my company(even the quality standards followed as mine was a German company) and also many questions related to Strength of material(me being a mechanical engineer)

When you enter the GD room, it will be a batch of 8-10 people inside. There would be 3 faculty members present to grade you. Only one of them would interact with you during the whole process of 15 minutes.

1. You are not supposed to look at the judges while speaking, you MUST pay full attention to your batch.

2. You should try to be the one among the first 3-4 people to speak. If you manage to speak sense within the first 2-3 minutes, you might well have clinched the deal.

3. It does not mean that you interrupt other people initially. GIVE EQUAL CHANCE TO OTHERS, Show them that you are MANAGER material.

4. If you have spoken around 3-4 times introducing examples, new ideas or a different take on the topic, your job there is done.

5. NEVER shout, abuse or interrupt during the process.

6. Have a chit-chat with your group before you enter the room to create a sense of ease. Make a common agreement against a fish market. Remember, even if you don't indulge in a 'fish market' GD, the whole group is given 0. This comes straight from our faculty.

7. The topics would be more general than current affairs. They would demand that you delve into your past readings to come up with something smart. My topic last year was " Are e-devices reducing importance of libraries?"

8. Don't start the discussion if you are not sure about the topic. Hear some people out so that you can form your opinions.

9. If it is a topic like " Is Lokpal justified?", NEVER take a side initially, ever. Assess the situation, give pros and cons and then you may summarize later.

10. Dress smartly, it helps. Wear a suit !!

The panel would give you two topics, your batch has to vote and decide. Normally, you would not face a topic which sews up your mouth. 15 minutes, that is all you would get. Make use of it.

Refer to past PG articles for more tips too.

I will try my best that most of you ace your PI.

The gd model was same as that of IMT. It was a 12 member group. Two topics were given and we were asked to discuss and select one.The topic the group settled for was,
"Government should step in and stop all coaching classes."
The other option was something like, "To survive (or was itsucceed????) in today's world u need to be a hypocrite."The GD was for a total of 20 mins. First 15 mins were to discuss the topic and thenext 5 mins in which each one of us had to summarize. We were allowed to give our own opinion also during the summary. There were 2moderators. I was the first person in the group and i got an edge seat in the Ushaped seating set up plus there were 3 or 4 people in the group with boomingvoices. So i wasnt able to make an impression in the gd. Whatever lil time i got cameat the most unexpected moments and i was caught off-guard. So I can say that thegd wasnt such a big success for me. also, as soon as the 15 mins got over, theyasked me, the first person, to summarize. All others got a bit more of time to frametheir summaries.
Interview
We had submitted a biographical sketch of 250 words and another writeup aboutwork experience and all. there were many qns from those two.The panel had a lady and a guy. They were friendly.
